Repost of article on Petite Jamilla (originally published in "Zaghareet" magazine

The following was written about Petite Jamilla before she became a huge Bellydance Superstar.  I thought I would repost it here.

Petite Jamilla
by Cheryl Pierce
Published in Zaghareet Magazine, Jan/Feb 2004 edition
Editor:  Shari Wittenberg aka Sharina, Elizabeth City, NC 27906
www.zaghareet.freeservers.com

She’s energetic, beautiful, talented and has a remarkable ability to transfix an audience when she performs.  She’s a master of finger cymbals, double veil, and spinning—sometimes for entire songs. She’s as good-natured as she is gifted and she is an amazing mix of the traditional and the modern in her dancing.  And, if that isn’t enough, she’s solidly on the professional belly dance track.   Her name is Petite Jamilla and she hails from Montevallo, Alabama, a small town situated close to Birmingham.

Perhaps her biggest accomplishment to date is being asked by Miles Copeland of Ark 21 to tour and perform with the Bellydance Superstars.  This second tour will begin February 12, 2004, and will last nine weeks with the dancers performing in 52 cities.  Petite Jamilla will be performing with dancers such as Ansuya, Jillina, Amar Gamal, Sonia, and others.  In addition to performing belly dance on the tour, Petite Jamilla will also display her talent at playing the bagpipes. (For more information on the Superstars tour see www.bellydancesuperstars.com.  Also, to read an interview with Miles Copeland, see Miles Copeland Responds, 12-9-03 www.gildedserpent.com).

In addition to living life as a third year college student (she’s a Communication Studies major with a focus in Feminist Rhetorical Criticism), playing the bagpipes, and belly dance, Petite Jamilla also teaches dance and has turned out some very good dancers.  She has used her talents as bellydancer and bagpipes player to assist with college expenses. (This earned her a telephone call from The Jay Leno Show after a Birmingham newspaper wrote a feature about her unusual way of working her way through college). She performs regularly at Ali Baba’s restaurant in Hoover, Alabama.  She also recently produced and is marketing two instructional DVD’s which have been receiving rave reviews.    Additionally, Petite Jamilla is the director of her own troupe called Sirqus of Jreams (pronounced “circus" of dreams).  Further, she has been featured in several Birmingham, Alabama newspapers and magazines.

Last summer she visited Paris, France where she performed for an opening of a University of Montevallo professor’s art exhibit.  She has also spent time in Nova Scotia on Cape Breton studying at a Gaelic-Scottish camp where she spent her days playing bagpipes and honing her talent.

In addition to her belly dancing, bagpipe playing, and performances, Petite Jamilla also travels within the state of Alabama competing in beauty pageants.  Her goal is to win a Miss Alabama title.  She placed 4th in the Miss Greater Dothan 2002 pageant as well as winning the talent award.  She also won the talent award at the Miss Twin Cities pageant in 2003.

Petite Jamilla is the daughter of Jamilla Rasa, owner of the Bohemian Market (www.bohemianmarket.com). Jamilla Rasa sells a wide variety of belly dance items.  Before she switched to vending, she danced, and when Petite Jamilla was very young, Jamilla Rasa taught her how to dance. (Her father is a retired Air Force (SMSGT) and her only brother is also in the Air Force).

Petite Jamilla first danced with her mother in California.  She doesn’t remember their first duet but she has seen the video and pictures.  “We wore matching red and gold costumes and I had braided pig tales,” she says.  She loved the shiny costumes and stayed with the dance throughout her early school years.  On weekends she went with her mother to MECDA  (Middle Eastern Culture & Dance Association) chapter meetings in Los Angeles.  She spent a lot of time in dance studios watching other performers.

What other events does she remember from her early dance days?  When asked, here’s what she said, “I still remember the first veil I ever received.  Marta Schill was teaching a veil workshop and I wanted to take it, but didn’t have a veil.  A student of my mothers gave me a home-made blue lame veil.  I still have it and still use it.  In fact, at school for my 4th grade talent show I did a veil routine to “I Can Show You the World,” from the movie Aladdin.  Every young girl at that time wanted to be Princess Jasmine. Naturally, my mom, being the big hearted person she is, started a children’s Middle Eastern dance troupe.  We were called Jamilla’s Jewels.  We performed at various events including Cairo Carnivale and the Bellydancer of the Year Competition in San Francisco.”

What happened later?  The family moved from California to Oklahoma.  Quite a change from liberal California!  Said Petite Jamilla, “I had a hard time adjusting and spent my time there very depressed.  As a result of having no friends, I had a lot of time to think and analyze things.  I felt as though everything I had done in dance was something I was able to do because mom gave me the opportunity.  I had convinced myself that this dance couldn’t be “mine,” since I would never have found it without my mom.  I didn’t want to be a vicarious reaction, I wanted an individual path.  I decided to stop dancing around age 13.  Of course, this decision made me even more depressed. I knew that the only reason I felt as though I needed to quit was simply because I was unable to handle the idea of this dance belonging to everyone the same and that it does not pertain to personal attachment as much as a collective attachment.  Then, we moved again from Oklahoma to Alabama.  I made a decision at this time to make myself happy.  You are what you make your experience, I thought, so I began dancing again.  There was a local troupe forming at the time and I guest starred with them for a few years.  We danced once a month at the 22nd Street Jazz CafĂ© and I thought that was the coolest thing since it was a club and I wasn’t even old enough to enter!  After that, mom started Bohemian Market and we began traveling to hafla’s and Renaissance Faires.  This gave me additional opportunities to dance.”

Petite Jamilla is an accomplished dancer at a very young age.  Additionally, she is talented at playing and performing with the bagpipes, and she directs her own troupe.  What else does she want to do?

“Well,” she said, “I’d like to be on the bellydance superstars tour as long as I can.  I’d like to write a book and have it published.  And I also want to be a wife and mom.”

With her track record so far, there is no doubt that she will accomplish all that and more!

BELLYDANCE to start at BODIBYYOU Private Fitness Center

Hello, everyone!

I am excited to announce that on Tuesdays, starting NOVEMBER 2, 2010, at 5:30 p.m. I will begin teaching a BEGINNING BELLYDANCE class in the Moffett/Schillinger's Road area at BodiByYou Private Fitness Center located at 3130 Ching Dairy Road.  The class will be 1 hour long each week. I am really happy about this class starting.

IF YOU CAN'T make the Tuesday Bellydance DANCE class there will be another Bellydance BELLY-FIT Class on Thursdays at 5:30 p.m. starting on November 4.

Tuition is: $35 per month per person, payable on the 1st Tuesday or Thursday of each month.  There is a discount for a mother/daughter duo, too.

It will take 8 weeks to cover all the basic beginner movements in the Tuesday class--so by paying the tuition in 2 easy payments it helps your budget. The same tuition applies to the Belly-FIT class.

What's the difference?  Bellydance DANCE teaches you how to bellydance with more detail and more in depth study of the movements and is taught by me. Bellydance BELLY-FIT is more of a low impact aerobic type class where you use bellydance movements but do not spend as in-depth time on the movements or dance history. This class is taught by Danielle, my assistant. She is pictured here in red.

Want more info.? Email me at: zivadiva2000@yahoo.com OR at zivadivabellydance@gmail.com

Bellydance is a wonderful activity to place into your fitness plan.  It is also low-impact and is a great way to have a "ladies' night out"! So, bring your friends!

NO prior dance experience required. NO certain body type or age is needed. : )  Come as you are and experience the joy!

THIS is why I teach bellydance!

THIS was emailed to me by a student, S.M.. She's a Zumba instructor and has taken dance in the past (not bellydance).  She gave me permission to share this because THIS is exactly why I love teaching bellydance.

“You truly have a gift, and not just the gift of dance but also the gift of inspiring, motivating, and encouraging people.

You are welcoming, inspiring, motivating and when your students mess up, you always, ALWAYS have something encouraging to say that makes them feel like, "ok... I don't have to be perfect and she's not aggravated with me... In fact, she seems kinda proud of me..."    And let me tell you, that's a great feeling.

You have that flirty, cutesy thing down pat and it makes a huge difference!  Anyway, you demonstrate that 'sexy' isn't the number on scale or how tight your abs are, it's inside you. All women posses it, and you enable them to find it.”

Bellydance is a FUN and DIFFERENT way to get some exercise and learn to use your body in an entirely different manner than as in a typical gym workout.

Bellydance is an equal opportunity dance! You do NOT need prior dance experience and you DON'T need a certain body type or be a certain age to learn it!  My oldest student in the past was 95 and my youngest was 8!

It is HIGHLY recommended that you PRE-REGISTER.

MEMORY LANE

I was going through some photos on my myspace page (www.myspace.com/daphnebellydance) and found some pix I'd forgotten about.

Such as this one taken back in 2000. I was modeling this costume sent to me by Kruz of New Orleans "by mistake". Actually, he knew if I tried it on I'd want to keep it--and I did! lol!

I also found this pic (gold costume) which is in a below post. I was having a friend take pix. I look at myself and remember how very passionate I was about this dance form.  I was in a group of women I loved. I traveled often with the troupe director and over the years I took workshops with some big international bellydance superstars.

Fast forward to 2005-
Here I'm playing with feather boas at a photoshoot in Fairhope.  This was fun.

I was with my friend, Jane, of Zuri, below.  This was not long after I started teaching in Daphne and we started hosting haflas for the local dancers. Check out my short, curly hair..lol!

Then, fast forward to 2010 and here I am performing an improvisational dance---I'm doing a Berber knee crawl with a sharp scimitar on my head!  Yes, it is sharp!

Bellydance has given me so much joy over the years. It helps me to feel confident, powerful as a woman, and I love how the moves make my body strong.

I am returning to teaching because so many have asked me to because they say I'm a good teacher. To this I say--I try..grins (!) But the main reason I will teach again is that I want other women to feel all these things.

THAT'S RIGHT! I'M RETURNING TO TEACHING.  DETAILS WILL COME IN 2-3 WEEKS!

Hugs to ya.

May '10
1999
"I'll be back..." (quoting Arnold Schwarzenegger)

Earlier this summer I posted that I was resigning from bellydance. Over the years I have taken a few breaks for various reasons. When I made that statement I fully intended to resign once and for all.

However, I learned that when something, such as love of a dance form, gets in your blood it is HARD to fully release that activity. Additionally, I had many requests from people to return to teaching.

After serious thought I have made the decision to RETURN to teaching bellydance in the next few weeks. I will teach and will perform at certain area venues as I have done in the past. Plans are in the works to make a full announcement within the next month.
May '10

Therefore, stay tuned.... : )

The pic to the above LEFT is of me in 1999 and the one on the top is 2010 as is the one to the right bottom.

ENLIVENING DUNBAR!

Tonig
ht my dancers & I (ZivaDiva Bellydance Co.) danced at Dunbar Elementary School. Dunbar had their end of school year performing arts show. Dunbar, for those who don't know, is a performing arts magnet school in downtown Mobile.

I want to thank Dunbar and those who invited us. We had a lovely time.

I thank my dancers who work harder and harder each day to help us to be outstanding performers. I was very proud of them tonight.

Except for my belt slipping down my pants, and except for us stepping on our pants (!), we "enlivened" the audience--which is so far the largest audience we've ever danced for.

What fun!

ROAD TRIP!

We, my performing troupe and I, traveled last weekend (Apr. 23-25) to Tallahassee to attend a workshop sponsored by Julianna at The Women's Bellydance Center. She hosted GIGI FAYED in a Spanish/Arabic fusion workshop. In a word, it was OUTSTANDING!

Gigi Fayed has spent over 30 years dancing and teaching. She taught some Flamenco steps and some moves that were beautiful. She also taught a workshop on Sunday on "Zambra Mora" which is a dance form that is pretty much dying out.

Gigi is available for workshops and I would HIGHLY RECOMMEND anyone consider her if one is thinking of hosting a workshop.

The show on that Saturday night was VERY good. Performers treated us to traditional Raks Sharki, tribal fusion, & Spanish influenced dances.

My group, ZivaDiva Bellydance Co. (aka Fuze), performed in 4 slots. We performed a group drum solo, Kathy P. and I performed Egyptian style dances, and I also performed a newly choreographed fusion number to a piece by Maduro.

We women (5 of us) had a BLAST!

HAFLA REPORT

Hafla for Haiti Report

This hafla was, perhaps, one of the BEST that we've had in this area. EACH and EVERY dancer was exceptional. As I watched the audience, I was thrilled to see them giving each dancer their undivided attention!

The American Legion Hall in Fairhope last night was rockin' with bellydance music and bellydancers performing a variety of dances ranging from Egyptian to Tribal Fusion to World Fusion! And as Kenny Graves stated, "who knew a woman's body could do all that!" (lol!)

Everyone should PURCHASE a copy of the dvd because this was a show you will want to see over and over again. For those of you who missed the show you can contact Ricardo Graphics Studio to get a copy. Their phone is 251-928-3440 and the email is: info@ricardographics.com. And of course they have a website and you can purchase pix made last night from there also. The web addy is: www.ricardographics.photoreflect.com

I have to THANK TWO VERY SPECIAL men who provided their special talents: to KENNY GRAVES who acted as emcee-THANK YOU! The bellydance community is especially grateful that you were with us last night and value you for being so willing to help us. We appreciate you, Kenny!

To JAMEY WARD a warm, heartfelt THANK YOU for handling the music and volunteering your time and equipment. We value you as a tireless supporter of our bellydance community and words cannot express how much we appreciate your efforts.

And to everyone else: Julie, Jane, & all those who helped collect the money; to Mike & Nancy who drove from Tallahassee to vend AND perform; and to each and every dancer-THANK YOU for sharing your talents with all of us.

A special thank you to my FUZE dancers who all helped to get the Hall set up by moving and lifting chairs and tables, decorating the stage and all the little things that had to get done.
Those of you who have hosted haflas and seminars in the past know that it is WORK. And without each and every person who helped it couldn't have happened.

Altogether we collected $700. After deducting the cost of the Hall rental of $200 we will be making a $500 donation to the Haitian relief efforts. And we all know that EVERY bit helps.

LOST AND FOUND! If you think you lost something email me at: zivadiva2000@yahoo.com BECAUSE we found a few items that we couldn't account for! lol!

AFTER THE HAFLA about 20 of us went to Wintzels to celebrate my big "5-0" birthday. I appreciate and love all those who planned this. And to AMANDA....my birthday cake was delicious---it was SO GOOD! Thank you!
I would be hard pressed to come up with a better birthday than this one which was spent with people I love.

HI!

I, ZivaDiva Bellydance, along with Mary Moore from Atlanta, GA, and the Zuri Dance Co., as well as Baklava Bellydance and MANY other bellydancers on the Gulf Coast want to let you know this:

ON SAT. FEB. 27, 2010, from 5:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m. at the American Legion Hall at 700 Mobile Street in Fairhope, Alabama, 36532, we will have a HAFLA FOR HAITI to do our part to assist so many people in need in Haiti. ADMISSION will be $10 for ALL (even dancers) with kids under age 8 getting in free.

If you are a dancer and wish to perform please contact me, ZivaDiva, at: zivadiva2000@yahoo.com OR call: 251-463-1299. The lineup is already filling up so call and reserve FAST.

Solo performances are allowed from 3-5 minutes and group dances up to 6 minutes. All music will need to be provided on a cd.

There will be a dressing area for those who need to change into costume but it'll be smaller than we're used to. Dancers will be allowed to get in at 2:30 p.m. Doors will open at 4:30 p.m.

VOLUNTEERS will need to help set up chairs and take 'em down after the event. Many hands will be needed to assist with getting things cleaned up and out of the venue site.

There will be TWO acts only. NO outside food or drinks are allowed by the venue site. This event will be a family-fun, alcohol free event.

After deducting the venue rental fee of $200 (anyone want to donate toward that?)--100% of the funds will go to Bay Community Church (our church) with a designation for the funds to be sent directly to Haiti.

AND...LOL! THAT WILL BE MY 50TH BIRTHDAY WEEKEND!!! COME ENJOY THE SHOW!! And help me celebrate STAYING YOUNG (hey..teehee...bellydance will do that do ya!)

TRIBAL STYLE BELLYDANCE-DAPHNE

Hey, you good lookin' folks!

Do you want a different bellydance experience or do you just want to learn bellydance? Well, in addition to me teaching in Daphne on Thursday nights (Egyptian styling & fusion) RITA BROWN, Director of Gypsy Chicks, in DAPHNE, ALABAMA teaches Tribal Style Bellydance on TUESDAY NIGHTS at 7:00 p.m. at the Daphne Recreation Center. TUITION is $35 per month.

I will be taking this class to enhance my own dance experience & practice. I encourage you to take it also.

Tribal Bellydance is a unique form of bellydance. You don't learn choreography, per se. You learn to watch the lead dancer (which changes) for "cues" which tell you what move is coming next. This style of dance promotes a strong bond of "sisterhoodliness" among the women who take the class.

Additionally, the costuming is different for this style of dance as opposed to the "sequins & rhinestone" look of the style I teach.

For more info email Rita at: dancingheartrita@hotmail.com
OR just show up for the class--and I'll see you there!

As soon as I have the tuition cost and session length I will post it here and everywhere else I appear on the web.

SHIMMIES TO YA~

Bellydance Bootcamp Technique Drilling Class!

Offered by ZivaDiva (that's me!). This is a challenge class for those who already know the basics. We drill technique in many different ways. Enhance your dancing and learn new ways to practice!

Class is Wednesdays at 5:50 p.m. on the 2nd floor of ACE Hardware at 5017-A Cottage Hill Road in Mobile (that's at the intersection of Cottage Hill Road and University Blvd.).

IF YOU CAN'T DO WEDNESDAYS then the same thing is offered on Saturdays at 10:00 a.m. for $10 (hey, it's the weekend price! lol!)

Tuition? It's a "Pay as you come" class where you pay only $5 each time you show up. And if you miss a class you don't miss anything-- such as parts of choreography.

It's strictly DRILL, DRILL, DRILL with a little sweat and hard work thrown in....you'll feel exhilarated!

Email me at: zivadiva2000@yahoo.com OR call 463-1299.

SPACE IS LIMITED TO 6 PEOPLE--I HAVE 3 AVAILABLE SPOTS!

BELLY DANCE CLASS REMINDER-DAPHNE

REMINDER OF CLASS STARTING:

In DAPHNE, Alabama:

Starts: Thursday, January 14, 2009

Time: 6:00 p.m. Beginners-Level I

Place: Daphne Recreation Center (corner of Hwy 98 & Whispering Pines-in same parking lot as the Civic Center across from Walgreen’s)

Tuition: $50 per person

Session length: 8 weeks, meets every Thursday

Belly Dance helps to improve self-confidence & self-esteem, and promotes greater flexibility and posture. It helps improve muscle tone (if practiced outside of class). Additionally, dance helps decrease stress and also is a great creative outlet! You also meet lots of other cool women.

Where else can you get exercise and get to wear pretty things like hip scarves, etc.??
